How to compare fuel cards
While there are obvious benefits to checking the total number of sites offered by a fuel card provider, how accessible those sites are based on your routes, and the types of benefits you could enjoy, it’s also important to understand how the cards are priced.
Common fuel card pricing models include:
- Pump related cards are priced according to the forecourt pump price, and some of these off-network sites do carry an additional handing fee.
- Fixed price cards offer you a fixed weekly diesel (and / or unleaded) price at certain sites on the network (Core or Bunker sites). Some of the sites for fixed priced cards do carry an additional handling fee.
- List price cards also offer a fixed price on diesel (and / or unleaded) and some sites do carry an additional handling fee.
Choosing your fuel card at face value can be difficult, and we’d advise contacting our dedicated fuel card experts for tailored insights into exactly which card is right for your commercial fleet.
Why compare fuel cards?
Every commercial fleet looks slightly different, with factors such as vehicle type, fuel type, and route locations ultimately influencing which fuel card fits the bill. Taking the time to compare fuel cards and making an informed decision is the best way to make sure that the fuel card you select is a good fit for your business. Some key considerations to make include:
Value
Fuel cards are there to help you save money, but to optimise your savings it’s important to ensure that your fuel card is ticking all the right boxes. Try to reconcile your fuel card usage with your route planning to ensure that the card you select provides optimal coverage for all of your drivers, and think about the types of petrol station your drivers can refill at.
Benefits
While fuel cards share a common purpose, each individual card often comes with a different set of benefits. Comparing fuel cards based on these benefits can help you find a good mix of prices, coverage, and benefits that are tailored to your needs.
HMRC-compliant invoicing (removing the need to save receipts), servicing and repairs discounts, and wider coverage are just a few examples of the benefits a card could offer. Make an informed choice and make your card go that little bit further.
Choose the right fuel card for your needs
Each fuel card comes with its own specifications, limitations, and rewards. Our handy comparison table helps you to make a well-informed decision about the fuel card you choose.
Keep your fleet in motion and make the most of the benefits they offer to help you bolster your savings.
