Stunning new 2L diesel engine now available in Audi A6 and A7 Sportback

When it comes to luxury cruisers, Audi’s A6 and A7 Sportback take some beating – and their appeal has just been given a boost with the addition of the brand’s 40 TDI engine.

This 201bhp two-litre front-wheel-drive diesel unit offers a level of pace and polish that befits each executive model range with a degree of efficiency that will be reflected in favourable calculations for business users, or so Audi says.

Away from flowery language, the new 40 TDI powertrain serves up some very attractive numbers, and in the A6 and A7 Sportback, it can return up to 62.8mpg with a CO2 output of as little as 117g/km (A6 Saloon on 18-inch wheels).

In the larger, heavier A6 Avant estate and A7 Sportback, fuel economy dips slightly to 60.1mpg, emitting 124g/km (A6 Avant with 18-inch wheels) and 122g/km (A7 Sportback with 19-inch wheels).

For business users, the 25g/km reduction to 122g/km on the A7 Sportback versus a 45 TDI quattro version equates to an even more competitive BIK rating of 29 per cent for a higher rate taxpayer.

Performance is suitably potent too for such strikingly chiselled models, with the saloon A6 40 TDI hitting 62mph from rest in 8.1 seconds, rising to 8.3 seconds for both the Avant and A7 Sportback.

Speed tops out at 152mph for the A6 saloon and A7 Sportback, dipping slightly to 149mph for the A6 Avant.

Prices for this new powertrain start from £38,640 for the A6 saloon, rising to £40,740 for the Avant estate with deliveries beginning in September. The A7 Sportback 40 TDI rings in at £47,140 and is expected to launch in November.

Ellie Baker, brand manager at Fuel Card Services, comments: “Any upper-level company car driver would be proud to drive one of these high-rung Audis and the arrival of such a powerful yet efficient diesel engine only heightens that sentiment.”
