Volkswagen’s new flagship SUV – the Touareg – is now available to order, with prices starting from £51,595 on the road.
The third-generation Touareg debuts a range of turbocharged engines and assistance systems, as well as the option of the new Innovision Cockpit, which comprises an intuitive and fully personalisable digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit.
Initially, the only engine option will be a 282bhp three-litre V6 turbo diesel unit.
But from the autumn, a 227bhp version of the same engine will join the range, followed by a 336bhp three-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine late 2018, with deliveries of that powertrain beginning in 2019.
The five-seat Touareg may only be launching with just the one powertrain choice, but it’s a good’un.
With a torque peak of up to 600Nm, the 282bhp 3.0 V6 TDI showcases the new Touareg’s extensive towing capacity (up to 3.5 tonnes) and VW’s handy Trailer Assist technology that facilitates simple slow-speed manoeuvring.
Mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, it comes with permanent all-wheel drive and can get the SUV up to 62mph from rest in 6.1 seconds, picking up speed until it hits 146mph, while returning 42.8 mpg on a combined cycle.
Spec is split over three trims: SEL (priced at £51,595), R-Line (£55,095) and the new R-Line Tech (£58,195).
Compared to the previous Touareg, this generation is 44mm wider and 77mm longer than before, stretching for 4,878mm, with a width of 2,193mm including wing mirrors and standing at 1,702mm high (-7 mm).
VW says that these changes create a significantly more dynamic car and with all-new styling, the Touareg has “an imposing yet lithe style”.
Ellie Baker, brand manager at Fuel Card Services, added: “The new Touareg promises to be something special and we’d expect nothing less than VW’s flagship SUV.”
