Dash cams have become a useful and near-indisputable tool in placing the blame after road traffic accidents, and new figures have revealed just how popular they have been in the last couple of years.
Research published by Accident Exchange shows that the use of dash-cam footage following car accidents has risen by 285 per cent since 2015.
This suggests that insurance claims are nearly three times more likely to be supported with dash-cam footage, compared to just two years ago.
Dash-cam sales have also skyrocketed a colossal 918 per cent in a single year, according to separate research from dash cam manufacturer Nextbase.
Scott Hamilton-Cooper, director of operations and sales at Accident Exchange, said increased use of dash cams will go some way to making the claims process less stressful.
“For many, the post-accident experience is one of the most stressful elements of car ownership, and it benefits everyone – motorists, accident management firms and insurers – to make it simple, stress-free and to limit unnecessary claims disputes,” he commented.
“The fact it brings even more transparency to the process is great for us and our customers.”
Around half of fleets are now using dash cams, a recent survey by the Road Haulage Association (RHA) found, while a further 30 per cent are actively considering introducing them.
Police forces in Wales have recently extended a pilot scheme to use dash-cam footage captured by private motorists to help catch dangerous drivers. This means anyone with incriminating footage can upload it via a secure online portal.
In contrast, dash cam footage of a crash involving a motorbike proved instrumental in exonerating a car driver earlier this year.
Molly Benton, brand manager at Fuel Card Services, comments: “When it comes to providing supporting evidence of a road traffic incident, dash-cam footage is about as good as it gets. Therefore, it makes sense that usage has shot up in recent years.”
