It may seem like it's been around forever, but Euro NCAP was not always the go-to safety rating for vehicles in Europe.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017, the organisation has played an integral role in saving countless lives since its inception in 1997.
Indeed, figures released by Euro NCAP estimate more than 78,000 lives have been saved during the last two decades through the body's efforts to better understand the forces at play when vehicles are involved in an accident.
Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen stated: "Euro NCAP has given millions of consumers the knowledge and confidence to choose the safest cars possible.
"Recent years have shown a slowdown in the progress rate, however, so we mustn't take our foot off the gas. We want to ensure that Europe's roads get even safer in the next 20 years."
He concluded that the coming years will witness an increased focus on crash avoidance and protecting vulnerable road users, with the aim of ensuring even safer vehicles for the years ahead.
Natalie Brinkley, brand manager at Fuel Card Services, adds: "Euro NCAP provides a massive service to all motorists, helping to drive up safety standards across the industry and highlighting to the consumer the safest cars on the market today."
