Despite the new year just now getting underway, one of the most acclaimed motoring accolades of the coming 12 months has already been announced, with the BMW 5 Series named the What Car? Car of the Year 2017.
Now in its 40th year, this annual accolade is one of the most prestigious on offer to the motoring community and it's therefore amazing news for the 5 Series, which was able to fend off strong competition from the likes of both Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce to also scoop the Luxury Car of the Year Award 2017.
What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: "The BMW 5 Series is no stranger to success at the What Car? Awards; it's something of a dynasty that has always stood for excellence, but the latest model moves things on again in all the areas that matter most to buyers."
Other winners unveiled at the annual What Car? gala awards ceremony in London this month included the Toyota Prius, which was named the What Car? and Thatcham Research Safety Award 2017 winner, as well as the Peugeot 3008, which won the 2017 Technology prize.
Natalie Brinkley, brand manager at Fuel Card Services, adds: "The 5 Series is a worthy victor of this stunning accolade in the What Car? Car of the Year category. It stands apart from its peers in delivering a real driving experience – something the public continues to crave."
