Training for Van driving professionals

BOOK A VAN SMART COURSE NOW – BOOK HERE

Transport for London has developed the new seven-hour CPC course ‘Van Smart’ that is specifically designed for van drivers and meets the mandatory Vulnerable Road User driver training requirements of CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cycle Safety), FORS Silver and TfL’s WRRR (Work Related Road Risks).

clocs-fors The Van Smart driver training programme endorsed by DVSA, aims to reduce work-related road risks and create long-term behaviour changes in the van sector by bringing about professionalism amongst the drivers.

The vast majority of van drivers are hard-working, reliable and dedicated individuals who look after their vans and are proud of their driving skills and ability to share the road effectively with other users. However, it is all too easy to some to forget some of the risks they may pose to themselves and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. In London, vans cover 80% of all freight mileage, 10% of road traffic accidents involve a van and 11% of those incidents result in serious injury or fatality. A DVSA report revealed that many vans fail their MOT first time and 89% of those stopped were found to be overweight.

The course consists of one 3.5hr theory module and one 3.5hr on-cycle practical module. The aim of the theory module is to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to become safer, diligent, more efficient and professional drivers. The practical module provides instruction to professional drivers to improve their awareness of vulnerable road users, using cycles on the public roads.

Van Smart contributes towards the 35 hours DCPC training that drivers need to complete by September 2019.

There are a number of key training objectives that the course gives a clear understanding of, including:-

  • To equip the drivers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to plan and prepare themselves for driving
  • To educate van drivers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to carry out their job diligently, safely, responsibly and with consideration for others
  • To familiarise van drivers to the issues a vulnerable road user may face on public roads (on-cycle practical module)
