Body Image

FCS supports Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 is taking place across the UK from May 13th to 19th. This year’s focus is ‘how does body image affect mental health?’.

Mental health is one of the most important issues facing businesses today and poor body image impacted one in five people in the last year. Overall, more than a third of all UK adults will suffer from issues of poor body image at some point in their life.

Supporting our staff and promoting wellbeing

At FCS, we’re intent on making mental health wellbeing a priority for our business.

Indeed, our CEO highlighted this fact in a message to staff: “We are looking at how we can develop a better place to work and promote mental wellbeing across our business.

“In addition, we will be creating our Mental Wellbeing Charter, setting out how we will equip our managers and support our colleagues in managing mental wellbeing at work by appointing Wellbeing Champions and providing additional training to all our supervisors.”

As a sign of support for Mental Health Awareness Week, our Oxford office has organised dress down days this week. Voluntary contributions of £2 a day will be donated to the Mental Health Foundation. Meanwhile, our other offices will also be holding bake sales and games to raise money.

Finally, all of our teams will be wearing green ribbon badges throughout the week, highlighting their individual support for this important event.

At FCS, our people are the heart of our business and we are constantly striving for excellence. We are always looking for new people to join our ever-expanding team, from a new office in Halifax to a new office in a new country: Germany.

Supporting employee wellbeing on Walk to Work Day

Support employee well being on Walk to Work Day

Walk to Work Day is taking place this Friday (April 5th) and offers a fantastic chance for businesses to promote enhanced wellbeing for their staff.

At FCS Europe, we are committed to providing a happy, productive atmosphere for all of our employees and walking can be a great way to achieve this.

Why support Walk to Work Day?

Walking to work is a positive way to boost your daily activity and offers a range of benefits for both businesses and employees.

Indeed, just 30 minutes of walking each day can help to significantly improve cardiovascular fitness, which in turn can lead to lower risks for a range of health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis.

Meanwhile, walking also helps to lift your mood and stimulate creativity. It means individuals who take the challenge and walk to work regularly can enter the office feeling happier and better able to face the challenges of their role.

As a result, millions of people could realise these significant benefits by taking part.

Our own efforts to get involved in Walk to Work Day 2019 are being supported by our partner Health Assured – UK and Ireland’s largest award-winning employee assistance programme.

We’ll be encouraging all of our staff to maintain healthier lifestyles by incorporating walking into their daily routines, as supporting our employees to boost their wellbeing by becoming more active is important to us.

At FCS Europe, our people are the heart of our business and we are constantly striving for excellence. We are always looking for new people to join our ever-expanding team, from a new office in Halifax to a new office in a new country: Germany.

Love your job

Fall in love with your job in February

February is one of those months when love is inevitably in the air, with Valentine’s Day having taken place in recent days, meaning now could be the perfect time for people to think about finding not just their perfect partner, but also their dream job.

So, in homage to Valentine’s Day and the joy of sharing a perfect union, here we look at three of the key things people should consider when “umming” and “ahhing” about what their their dream role should have to offer:

Can you be passionate about it?

There’s an old saying that ‘if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life’. This remains as true today as it ever was. Indeed, turning a passion into a profession can be extremely rewarding. However, you have to be careful not to overdo it, which can easily lead to burnout and see that passion become something not enjoyable at all.

Are you sufficiently challenged?

Boredom can be a killer in any job, but so too can excessive demand. For that reason, it’s important to achieve the right balance between being challenged in your role and not being sufficiently stretched. You should always aim to be busy, but not so much that it has an adverse impact on other parts of your life.

Do you enjoy the culture?

With the amount of time people spend at work, it’s important that the culture of a business is one that you enjoy being part of. This means getting on well with colleagues and working in a supportive, positive atmosphere. However, it should also prompt you to ask themselves some fundamental questions:

  • What matters most to me and will this company help me to achieve that aim?
  • Does what I’m doing make a difference in the world, and is that important to me?
  • Does the business match with my own personal values?

In the end, everyone’s perfect job will be something different. However, knowing what to look for can be half the challenge when seeking your ideal role. We hope we’ve provided some food for thought!

Leeds Office

FCS Recruitment backs Leeds Mind with fundraising day

FCS Recruitment has hosted a fundraising day in support of the Leeds branch of the mental health charity Mind.

The event, held at the Fuelcard offices in Leeds, involved a day of great fun and copious amounts of fundraising.

FCS Recruitment supports the cause of improving mental health, recognising what a major issue this can be in the workplace. Anxiety, depression and stress can make the working day much harder, harm performance and cause significant damage to personal wellbeing.

Blue Monday

The event was arranged to coincide with Blue Monday, the day when, on average, people feel the gloomiest. The weather is cold, the days dark, the afterglow of Christmas has worn off and the bank balance is low. All these factors contribute to people feeling generally low.

However, instead of having a ‘Blue Monday’, the office went for a multicoloured one! Staff had some fun in the workplace, raised some cash and put a smile on lots of faces.

Staff dressed down, there were cakes on sale, and a competition to guess the number of sweets in the jar. Perhaps most fun of all, there was a chance to put a custard pie in the face of the managers… Suffice to say, there was a long queue for this!

You might think that all this fun would stop much work being done, but that was far from the case. An unprecedented 26 applications were received.

That may also suggest that lots of people fancy a career change to get their new year off to a flier.

While that could be a big boost for those who get new jobs, the underlying causes of mental health issues may remain. That is why the work of charities like Mind is so valuable – and why Fuelcard Services is so keen to support what they do.
